It anguished in the Czechoslovakia book vor years before I image was conveying. There is a small set of similarly designed stamps I think though I have not set out to put them together. These are several interesting elements; I can't tell if it's a mouse of what sort of creature that is at the very bottom of the stamp.
Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-27801453270211656792023-01-31T18:10:00.004-08:002023-01-31T18:10:44.306-08:00US pipe organ stamps?Update winter 2023: I started writing this come time ago and never finished it. I am not why certain. I hope it can stand on its own as it is.

Recently, in his on-going series of articles on pipe organ stamps for the Organ Club Journal (UK), Mark Jameson covered postal items from the US. While he mentioned several items of interest, there were no specifically pipe-organ related stamps issued by the USPS. In my opinion the closest thing was a pre-paid postal card issued in 1990. However the card featured specifically Orchestra Hall in Chicago, IL. The card was part of a much larger (longer) series of postal cards celebrating important architecture in the US. The presence of the organ facade on stage, visible from the seats, was coincidental for this particular card.

This evening I was reading an article on the restoration of the Kotchmer Memorial Organ in Portland, Maine, found in the most recent issue of The Tracker, journal of the Organ Historical Society here in the US. The author as part of the summation proclaimed that the instrument was of such stature that it should be considered a national treasure. That got me thinking, once again, about what pipe organs I would select to be celebrated on a hypothetical set of stamps to be issued sometime in the future by the USPS.

There is plenty of organ history in the US from the earliest instruments in New England to the very large and important series of music hall installations in recent years. Herewith my selections, totally personal, for inclusion in a set of postage stamps celebrating the pipe organ in the US, listed in order of priority, for a set of 4, 5, 6 or more stamps.
In addition to this painting, there is a similar work, on a slightly smaller scale. Differences in details abound, soon too many to enumerate. The present stamp is unusual in that it seems to an unlikely figure in the larger scope of the painting; but we thereby ger a nice, detailed look at the organ. There is still not enough information to know any details about the instrument.
Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-73554228890123790832023-01-31T11:39:00.000-08:002023-01-31T11:39:31.396-08:00Canada Prince and Princess 2011

Canada issued the two version of this pane in 2011 for the royal wedding. The stamp pictures a musical salon scene with participants/listeners and perhaps a clergyperson in the rear of the scene. In the background is an inset picture of Mozart which includes an image of a pipe organ. Another performer is playing an additional keyboard instrument, a piano or harpsichord perhaps. The stamp seems to show a fairly specific organ, though I cannot determine what instrument it may be. I would be happy to hear suggestions.

Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-41832840919441908112023-01-28T08:14:00.002-08:002023-01-28T08:14:28.804-08:00Shift of focus
I was diagnosed with glioblastoma brain cancer in 2022. If seems that these are each small music boxes. One of them is an ornate pipe organ. The description tells us only, "the organ clock." Once can assume that there is a wind-up mechanism within that provides music of some sort and perhaps some motions. The stamp is gummed, part of a set of 6, and each are denominated .68 Euros. It was issued in 2015. There is a large bar code in the lower left corner presumably for tracking and sales information. The reverse of the sheet is completely blank. I have not tried to identify the location of the various instruments.
Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-48733406236364077962021-12-28T17:03:00.000-08:002021-12-28T17:03:08.763-08:00Equatorial Guinea: Famous people

Equatorial Guinea issued a set of three stamps in 1996 honoring three diverse famous people. Those depicted are Alfred Nobel (1833-1896), Anton Bruckner (1824-1896), and Giovanni Tiepolo 1696-1770). The year of issue, 1996, was an anniversary year for each of these persons. There seems to be no other connection between these figures and that nation. Scott does not give a more specific issue date other than 1996 for this set (SNC 217a, b, c). There was a higher-denominated souvenir sheet issued as part of the set; I do not have an example of that. The three stamps were issued together: most collectors maintain them as a strip of three attached stamps. Bruckner is shown in front of an organ facade. I believe it is the St Florian Monastery instrument, closely associated with him.

Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-4040313472107475952021-12-28T09:52:00.000-08:002021-12-28T09:52:03.334-08:00Czech Republic: Natural beauties

The Czech Republic issued this pair of stamps in 1995 celebrating two large rock formations, under the category of "natural beauties" in that nation. Of course there is no organ present; the basalt formation shown on the 8k stamp looks somewhat like organ pipes. I have included the stamp in this pipe organ stamp inventory for completeness, as this stamp has appeared on "pipe organ" lists for some time. There are several basalt formations that mimic organ pipes. I think this is the only one that features on a postage stamp. The stamps were issued 3 May, 1995. It is four stamps in a mini-sheet. My version is not perforated. I am fairly certain a perforated version is available. This sheet is Scott #975. It shows Amadeus Mozart with a keyboard and musical score; Beethoven with organ pipes; Antonio Vivaldi with a violin; and Chopin with a piano. It seems there were also issued a set of 4 individual stamps, #971-974 showing the same composers but with different background elements. (Hans Timmerman's site shows the Beethoven stamp as a sheetlet of four identical stamps. It is denominated 1020 francs, rather than 1090 as described in Scott, and it has the same background (pipes) instead of the monument described in the catalog.) It may be possible to discern what organ is shown in the Beethoven stamp, but I am not able to figure it out. This stamp was issued in the latter half of 2019. It is in a similar format to other stamps in the series. The instrument was built by Jan Hummel and his apprentice Jerzy Notrowski in the early 1600's. By 1972 the organ was not playable, and a long series of improvement projects was begun. This Polish organ site gives great details about the instrument, including specifications and photographs. the level of research that has gone into the reconstruction of the instrument is laudable. I must thank my friend Mark Jameson who has generously shared with me copies of the stamps, various FDC's, and some of the large folios the Polish post office has prepared related to the stamps in this series.

Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-19325260431598371872021-01-25T11:01:00.000-08:002021-01-25T11:01:40.206-08:00Poland: St John, Torun

Poland continued its "historical organs" series with two stamps in 2019. The first to be issued was for Torun Cathedral. Similar to others in the series, there is a single large format stamp in a mini-sheet. The cathedral church of St John the Baptist and John the Evangelist contains two instruments. The smaller of the two is shown on the stamp. It's believed that an instrument was in place by 1497. It is part of a series of stamps noting various religious structures in that nation. The stamp shows the iconic exterior of the facility; the selvage includes an image of a new pipe organ by the Mander firm of Great Britain.Pinang may refer to the Malaysian state, Pinang, or to the Pinang Island, though they appear to be essentially one and the same. The church is the largest in South-East Asia.

The British East India Company seized the bit of land that includes Georgetown in the late 1700's. It was a British enclave that affected British characteristics for many years. The church of St George was begun in 1815 and consecrated in 1819. A pavilion was erected in 1886 in the lawn in front of the west end doors.

A new organ was installed by the Mander firm in 2018. The firm's website give s bit more history: the church was built by Indian convict laborers. The building was bombed in 1941 and looted. It was restored and re-opened in 1948. The first organ was a second-hand Bryceson instrument originally serving a church in Singapore. That was replaced in 1899 by a Forster and Andrews instrument. That organ received some work in 1931, but was then destroyed in the 1941 bombing. Electronic instruments served the church until 2017. The area in which the church is situated was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, and major restoration of the church was done again in 2009.

The Mander site gives some interesting details about the placement of the instrument in the church, as well as specification.

The sheet of stamps has 20 stamps arranged in four columns of five stamps each. There is narrow selvage on all sides, and a wider selvage dividing the four columns in the center. The organ, and church steeple, are shown there. Other religious buildings appear in the outer selvage. The stamps include an indication "4/5." I have not investigated yet, but I suspect that may relate to the stamps appearing in the series being produced by the postal authorities.

Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-78385606892017495662021-01-15T08:09:00.000-08:002021-01-15T08:09:19.402-08:00Great Britain: Hampton Court Palace

In 2018 Great Britain issued a set of stamps celebrating the Hampton Court Palace, most strongly associated with King Henry VIII. Six stamps show views of the exterior of the building, and two landscape shots. A mini-sheet of 4 stamps shows interior views. Shown inside are the Great Hall, the King's Bedchamber, the Chapel Royal, and King's Staircase. Two of these stamps pay the FirstClass postage rate, and two of the stamps are denominated 1.45 British pounds. The chapel image includes the facade of the organ contained therein. The first organ in the chapel was installed in 1711-1712, built by Christopher Schrider. Harrison and Harrison Ltd did the most recent work on the instrument in 2013. The current instrument is contained in the case for the original Schrider instrument, built by Grinling Gibbons.

https://www.chapelroyalhamptoncourt.org.uk/the-organ/

Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-85254754031926978962021-01-15T07:38:00.001-08:002021-01-15T07:38:11.035-08:00Poland: Veit Stoss carvings

Veit Stoss was a German-born sculptor living in Krakow, Poland in a period spanning the Gothic and Northern Renaissance eras. Some of his most important work is found at St Mary's Basilica in that city. The altarpiece is the largest in the world and was created between 1477 and 1489. Poland commemorated this masterpiece with a set of six stamps (Scott #925-930) plus a miniature sheet (#931) in 1960. The six stamps show details from the altarpiece; the sheet-stamp shows the central panel. The altarpiece is about 13 meters tall and 11 wide. There are 3 panels on each side of the triptych design, and a larger central panel. Each is painted wood. On the center panel in the middle left is an angel playing a portatif organ. The angel is shown with robes of gold and green, and wings of gold. The stamp is essentially in black, but the angel and the organ are still visible.

Mike Barkerhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12636163882671605877noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1576576252148452600.post-47009394220528163302021-01-15T06:51:00.000-08:002021-01-15T06:51:42.893-08:00Guinea: German and Austrian Composers

Guinea issued a mini-sheet and a sheetlet of four stamps commemorating German and Austrian composers in 2017. The sheet of four stamps includes images of Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn and Schubert. The mini-sheet shows Anton Bruckner. An organ is in the background of the Bruckner stamp.

European colonizers divvied up the African continent savagely in previous centuries. Portugal, France and Spain all laid claim to areas that included the name "Guinea." The region was a major source for gold which is why it was important to the colonizers. After the various colonies gained independence they took various names: the Spanish region became Equatorial Guinea, the Portuguese region became Guinea-Bissau; French Guinea became simply Guinea. Thus these stamps are from the formerly French region, and include French on the stamps and use francs for the denominations.

Anton Bruckner is closely associated with the St Florian Church in Austria. He has been interred in the church's crypt since his death. The organ pictured on the stamp seems to be that of the St Florian church. Rather than a larger picture of Bruckner in the selvage of the sheet as is often done with this sort of stamp issue, an image of JS Bach is shown.

The organ was built in the 16th century by Franz Xavier Chrismann of Slovenia. Paraguay issued a set of 8 stamps in 1976 honoring the "500th anniversary of the birth" of the artist Titian. However many set Titian's birth year later in the 15th century, 1488 or 1490. The artist's -death- is generally fixed at 1576, so this set might more accurately commemorate the 400th anniversary of the artist's death. Titian was the most important artist of the so-called Venetian school of artists during the Renaissance era. The 8 stamps (Scott 1708 a-g, and 1709) all feature nudes from various works by Titian. The high value stamp is a detail from "Venus and the Organist." At the extreme left edge one may discern organ pipes of a small portativ instrument. The lower-value 7 stamps are often collected as a connected strip; mine are singles. Titian had about him a workshop of artists all using the same visual style. Titian and his workshop painted several variations of Venus reclining with an instrumentalist visible, and sometimes other elements, notably a dog or cupid. All were from the mid-1500's. Below are two version of Venus reclining from Titian's workshop.
Several items included in this blog are not common stamps taken from larger panes (sheets of 20 or more stamps for example). Often times stamps related to organs are issued in smaller groupings. These go go by a couple of different names (or more), and are imprecisely delineated even by professional collectors and tradespersons. I tend to use the terms "souvenir sheet" and "miniature sheet" or "mini-sheet" rather interchangeably. As this is cropping up more in recent months, I decided to investigate a bit. I was gladdened to learn I am not alone in my uncertainty about the differences, and my tendency to be indiscriminate in my use of the terms. This article attempts to clarify. In the US most stamps are issued in panes of 20, though commemoratives that are featuring multiple visual examples on a specific theme may use fewer stamps in a pane (10, 12, 15, 16, etc). Recent examples might include 12 different works by an artist, or 15 different examples of energy conservation. These might include a top banner that identifies the stamps or the set. Those are all still "panes" in my estimation. The 2018 Art of Magic pane of 3 lenticular stamps is a recent example of a souvenir sheet: small number of stamps in the grouping, decorative selvage. Also the 2016 Classics forever sheet of six Washington-Franklin stamps would be a souvenir sheet of 6, and it includes a somewhat decorative selvage.
The Askeryds Church is an ancient facility near Aneby within the state church of Sweden's (broadly Lutheran) Linkoping Diocese. This site (below) gives some general history of the church but includes remarkable details about the organ. Reading a translation of the Swedish gives mixed results: equal measures of clarity and confusion. The church dates from the 13th century. An organ is first mentioned in church records from 1590. An organ of 1 manual by Wistenius was installed in the west gallery in 1760. Pedals were added in 1770. The instrument was relegated to un-use by 1905 in favor of an instrument Zetterquist in one of the transepts. Ultimately the Zetterquist organ was moved to the gallery and the Wistenius organ was placed on the main floor in a transept. Frobenius (Denmark) restored the Wistenius organ 1961-1962. Frobenius does not list the work they did on this organ on their website, presumably because it was restoration work rather than a new instrument.
Romania issued this stamp in 2016. It was the third in a set commemorating Romanian "curiosities and superlatives." The instrument was built by Carol Buchholz in 1869 for the Black Church in Brasov, Romania. Renovations were done in 1966 including some stop changes, but these were un-done in 2003. I was able to find a stoplist within a database maintained by the Lutheran Church in Romania. The other two links below give some narrative history of the church and organ. I blogged about Daniel Croner and his relationship with this organ here. Since writing that post I have secured a handful of small-scale pieces by him.
